Your Maramataka guide for the week

(Scroll down for Reo version)

The Māori lunar calendar is called Maramataka, and it is still used by many to plan ahead and act according to the whims of the moon. Māori have spent centuries observing and understanding the world around them, using what they discern to better care for the community. One of the ways in which they achieved this was through observing the weather patterns that match the lunar cycle, and using it to predict what activities and attitudes were best suited for certain days.

Now especially is a time of reflection and planning, of looking after those around you whilst also maintaining your own care. Which is why we’d like to (once again) give readers the opportunity to plan their week according to the Maramataka calendar.

Tangaroa-ā-mua

Monday, 15 September 2:13 AM - 10:44 AM

Today, along with the next few days to come, is a very good day for fishing. The water is rich with kai and this would also typically be a good time to plant your food. If fishing and farming aren't your speed, then it wouldn't hurt to catch up on chores and clear some space for the rest of your week.

Tangaroa-ā-roto

Tuesday, 16 September 3:12 AM - 11:50 AM

Another excellent day for fishing, but also a great time to connect with your loved ones. This is a time of creativity, kōrero, and connections. Take advantage of the ideas that are flowing and bounce them off of your friends and family. Maybe even commit to that coffee catch up with that mate you haven't seen in a while.

Tangaroa Whāriki Kiokio

Wednesday, 17 September 3:59 AM - 1:02 PM

The last day of the longest productivity period in the Maramataka calendar. Energy levels might dip a little today, which is why it's good to remember that while it's best to capitalise on this period, it's also important to do one thing at a time. Be open to learning a new skill or polishing a plan long in action. Take your time and pace yourself.

Ōtane

Thursday, 18 September 4:36 AM - 2:14 PM

There's still a lingering high of energy on this day, and this phase is typically dedicated to masculinity and muscular energy. Men were thought to be especially rejuvenated during this time. This was also known to be a good time for late night eeling, so interpret that however you will.

Ōrongonui

Friday, 19 September 5:05 AM - 3:25 PM

Today is a day of peace that was thought to be powered by Rongo, the god of growth. You should focus on cultivation and whatever it is that grants you peace. With it being the end of the working week, make sure to give yourself the space to relax and unwind. Be that with a quiet night in, or an evening of laughter and love.

Mauri

Saturday, 20 September 5:29 AM - 4:32 PM

Today is generally regarded as a bad day, with the energy from the previous days being depleted and the moon on the cusp of emptiness. Best to focus on smaller tasks today and keep to your usual routine. It's important to be mindful of yourself and others on this day and to reflect on what has been accomplished.

Mutuwhenua

Sunday, 21 September 5:50 AM - 5:37 PM

The worst day of all, for the moon is dead. Do something to look after yourself, be it a new haircut or a day of rest after the long week. But also remind yourself that some days will inevitably be bad, but they will also pass, and a new cycle is soon to follow.
