Massey balls make a comeback after three years
After years of absence, students will have the chance to dress up and hit the dance floor, as the university revives one of its most anticipated social events.
The annual Massey event, once considered a rite of passage, was abandoned during Covid-19.
Tickets went live last week on Te Tira Ahu Pae’s website.
Halls have continued to host their own balls over the years, but this will be the first Massey-wide event formally organised by the student association in three years.
Wellington students will kick off the ball season on September 27th with a Labyrinth themed night at The Great Hall on campus.
Auckland and Palmerston North will follow with casino-themed balls on October 4th. Albany’s event will be held at the North Shore Golf Club, while the Palmy venue will likely be held at The Refectory, but is yet to lock it in.
A Te Tira Ahu Pae spokesperson said, “In Auckland and Manawatū, students can expect a sit-down dinner and casino games. In Wellington, we’ll have yummy food platters, and one free drink included with your ticket.”
“If students respond well, which we hope they will, the Balls will become a normal part of our annual plans.”
This year, planning at each campus will be led by student committees, ensuring events are shaped by those who know the community’s best.
“Each campus’ ball will be unique to reflect the campus culture. Our ball committees are led by students, keeping students’ ideas at the forefront of the event planning.”
The team at Red Frog will also be ensuring the events remain safe and enjoyable spaces for all.
“This is a chance for students to get dressed up with their friends, get some pics, have a boogie and make some memories.”
Previous themes have included Red Carpet, Euphoria, and Floral, featuring live music, meals, photobooths, and professional photographers and videographers.
This exciting announcement reflects Te Tira Ahu Pae’s commitment to bringing back beloved pre-pandemic traditions for Massey students.
Te Tira Ahu Pae is currently taking on interest for a ball committee and volunteers for the event as well as feedback for music, themes, decor, and food.
