Petition to see library’s opening hours extended

A petition to see the Wellington Campus Library extend its hours, particularly through exam times, is gaining traction.

The petition, which can be found on the Massey at Wellington Students’ Association’s (MAWSA) website, has more than 60 signatures.

The petition is spearheaded by Massey at Wellington Students’ Association President, Adam Logan Cairns, with help from MAWSA’s Advocate Kate Te Ao.

As of June 22, 53 per cent of those who signed the petition said they would occasionally study late in the library. Meanwhile, 45 per cent said they studied late in the library “all the time”.

Cairns says he would love to see the library extend its hours to at least midnight.

“Then students can hand in their assignments that are due at that hour of the evening with no problems or hesitations,” he says.

“I would also like to see the hours extended so that students have a safe and warm place to study during the exam periods.”

However, Cairns says feedback he received from Massey staff may suggest otherwise as it does not have enough data to suggest extending opening ours would be viable.

University Librarian Linda Palmer says they were approached by Cairns and Te Ao after students expressed interest in seeing the library open its doors for longer.

Palmer says library staff carry out hourly head counts to see how many students are using the library throughout the day.

During the last two hours the library is open, there is roughly around 20 students using the library. The library can fit a maximum of 1500 students at any one time.

“We love having the feedback and it couldn’t come at a better time because we are planning for next year… however, if the data doesn’t back up the feedback we are a bit stuck.”

She says if students want to see a change in hours they need to be using the library, especially later at night.

If the library was to stay open later, staff would also take into account availability of public transport, student concerns about safety and staff safety.

The spokesperson says any changes to opening and closing times would likely happen in 2018.

  • The library is open Monday to Thursday from 8am to 11pm, Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 8pm during term time.
