Students can grab their togs and towel and jump in for a splash at Albany’s new stadium pool.
The pool facility is right next to the QBE stadium and is only a stone’s throw away from the university.
The new facility includes a spa and sauna, aqua classes, a 20 metre lap pool and a fitness and group exercise area.
Pool Centre Manager, Tanya Langenbach, says the pool build has been 20 years in the making.
“The Upper Harbour Local Board plus the North Shore Council, as they were known at the time, saw there was a need for a pool in the Albany area because it was such a fast growing area.
“I guess there was a bit of indecision about where it was going to go initially… and there were a few obstacles in the way but they finally got there in the end.”
Now under the jurisdiction of the Auckland Council, the pool has been under construction since January 2015 and was finally opened to the public on the January 28 this year.
The pool has the capacity to hold about 250 people.
However, there has been some controversy over whether or not it’s actually big enough to accommodate the high demand for those living in Albany.
Throughout the holidays the pool has seen as many as 1000 to 1500 people a day.
Langenbach says this is to be expected in the first few weeks of opening.
“We opened right in the peak time [of the school holidays] and we opened just before two long weekends so that explains the big long queues we had.
“I think initially people wanted to check out the new pool and so they came in. But it has settled down since then.”
Langenbach says with school holidays in the past university students should venture to the pool and dip their toes in the water.
“During the day when Massey students are able to come over here it’s ideal to come lap swimming because there is plenty of space then… and students get 15 per cent off the normal standard fare.
“[Students] can join as a full facility member and that gives them access to the gym, all the group exercise classes, plus you can go lap swimming, and also use the spa and sauna.”
