Give me an elevator pitch of your style!

I do many different styles and medias of work. I use a lot of mixed media, my work is often about individuals, their stories and their environments. If I were to personify my work into an individual it would be a cross between Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Jonone and my main man Kanye West.

What do you love about art?

What I love about art is the power it has. Art can build or destroy countries, stop and start wars, inspire a nation and inspire a movement or an individual. Once you understand the power that you are dealing with you have an immense respect as a humble practitioner of the craft and everything that has been done before you.

What is your proudest moment as an artist?

My proudest moment as an artist was representing New Zealand at the World Championships of Performing Arts and receiving 3 World Championship medals. It was a privilege to represent my country and I was very humbled by the opportunity. It was also amazing to meet so many creative and talented people!

What did you study?

I did IB (International Baccalaureate) in China (Shanghai) where I studied sports science, psychology, art and Chinese. I studied first year of Fine Arts here at Massey but have chosen to switch to second year CMP to study VFX. I think VFX is one of the forefronts of visual imagery and believe that CMP would add to my storytelling and art skill set. I also want to dive into VR and Maya. Exciting times!

Advice for any budding artists out there?

I am in the same boat as my fellow artists but my intuition tells me that looking after your health is a huge part of being an artist. Your mind and body are connected in many ways and if you want to be as innovative and productive as possible, it is essential that you look after your physical and mental wellbeing. Eating the right food, not going to bed at stupid times and having physical exercise (even if it’s just a pickup game of basketball or a walk) is a great idea.

If you are putting in the hours and enjoying the game then you have already won. Work hard and collaborate with different artists in the community. We can learn a lot from each other.
