Despite their historic victory last season, Massey’s A1 Netball team have their feet firmly on the ground as they begin the 2017 season.
With big expectations on their shoulders, club president, Sarika Rona says thinking about a title defence isn’t a right this year’s team has deserved.
“Defending champions is not a term we use. Last years’ team managed to have a great season, but that was last year. This years’ team needs to work hard at trainings and in games to see what it can achieve. There are seven other teams in the competition who all want to do well and need to be respected.”
Rona attributes their success to the overall attitude within the club that has been cultivated over a number of years.
“Over the past couple of years’ we have been working on building club culture. The club is only as good as the people who volunteer and dedicate their time and efforts into making it a positive place to be.
“This year we are excited to begin the year with a strong and committed group of people who are eager to plan club events, coach, umpire, fundraise, handle the finances, collaborate with other groups, answer emails, and so much more.”
As for Massey A1, Rona says that the goals for each player remain the same and their job is to focus on the here and now and not look to the future.
“The goals for the team are the same as they were/are for any individual game, this year or last year. If we look too far ahead then we are not focused on the here and now. We do not look any further ahead than the next game and once we are there, the next centre pass.”
Rona highlights the tremendous help given by sponsors that enable the club to keep functioning.
“We are thankful to welcome Pita Pit a new sponsor this year and also want to acknowledge the continued support of MUSA, Pub Charity, NZ Uniforms and The Esplanade Railway for their contributions to playing uniforms, training gear, and fundraising opportunities.”
If you want to get in behind your club, come along on a Tuesday night to the CET Arena to support the A1 team or on a Saturday morning at Massey courts to support the social league teams or on a Saturday afternoon at Vautier Park to support the competitive teams.
